Yesterday, I shared with you the ideas of writing down the three things you want to finish tomorrow. I also talked about “habit stacking.”
Today, we're going to do a little more habit stacking. Take what you learned yesterday and spread it across your life.
Here's what I'm talking about.
Somewhat generically, I described yesterday about how you should write down the 3 things you want to finish. This is your daily “to-do” list.
But I wasn't specific about it. I told the tale in the setting of “work.”
But you don't just have work to do (and work to-do's), you may have kids and a family where you need to get S**t done. Or a side hustle. Or a project at home. Whatever.
There are many aspects to your LIFE.
Compartmentalization
YOU get to decide how you compartmentalize your life. It's entirely up to you.
Here's how some people deal with it…
You may have a job you go to every day from 8 to 5. Then you come home and maybe prepare dinner and help your kids with homework. Maybe you have a side hustle. Or maybe you have a project at home you're working on.
Maybe you have all of the above. Or none of the above.
What you do with your time is your business. It's your life.
The only real finite and non-renewable resource any of us have is time.
Use it wisely.
So for your to-do lists, now you get to think in terms of these “compartments” of your life.
Say you're not married and don't have kids, have a day job, and you're working on starting up a side hustle. You have a boyfriend or girlfriend that you want to spend time with.
A suggestion would be:
- job
- side hustle
- significant other
- LIFE (health, wealth, hobbies, happiness)
Write out your top three things you want to finish tomorrow for each of these compartments. Write them down tonight. Sleep on them. Tomorrow, pull out your list for your job. When your job is done, go home and work on your side hustle to-do list. Then your relationship to-do list. Finally, your LIFE to-do list.
By the way, it doesn't have to be in that order. In fact, you should probably turn the order above upside down and work on YOURSELF first. But ultimately, it's up to you.
In a future post, we'll talk about priortizing your life goals. And we'll delve into what you should be putting down on your to-do lists in order to achieve these goals.
Keep in mind that doing things just to do them is not the smartest use of your time. When you get better at getting things done, we will graduate to putting down on those to-do lists tasks that nudge you along in the realization of your goals.
Thinking ahead
Every life objective or goal can and should be broken down into smaller steps. And those smaller steps most likely can be broken down into smaller steps. And those steps can be broken down into smaller steps…Until you get to things you can do in minutes rather than days, weeks, months, or years.
Those are the things you put down on your daily to-do lists!
See you tomorrow.
